What is a Lantern Parade?

Lantern parades are community celebrations or rituals where people create and carry illuminated handmade lanterns downtown, bringing people together through art, creativity, and community pride.

These traditions take place around the world, and hold cultural significance for many people and communities. For Holiday Alley, we wanted to create our own local interpretation of this tradition, one that reflects the natural beauty and history of our region.

Theme & Inspiration

Our 2026 Lantern Parade theme is WATER inspired by all the ways water shapes life in our region.

Participants might create lanterns that reflect:

  • The shape of water - rain, snowflakes, ice, frost, rivers and waves, etc.
  • What lives on and with the water - catfish, pelicans, frogs, turtles, and water bugs, etc.
  • How people use water - canoeing, fishing, skating, boating, wetlands, etc.

Lanterns can be made of natural and recycled materials like:

  • Willows branches or wire to form into shapes then cover in waterproof tissue or translucent materials.
  • Large plastic pop containers or large milk jugs then decorated.

Just remember to use battery-operated lights instead of candles to keep your lantern safe throughout the parade.
